ROHS Compliance Test

RoHS stands for the Restriction of Hazardous Substances. The RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU provides information concerning restrictions of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. The cable experts in our industry-leading laboratory conduct RoHS Testing as part of our QA protocols as well as offering independent testing on third-party cables to determine compliance.

The Directive lists the following substances as being of a hazardous nature when used above the specified limits: 

RoHS testing is non-destructive as detailed in BS EN 62321-1:2013 and includes the use of X-Ray Fluorescent Spectrometry (BS EN 62321-3-1:2014).

A clean piece of cable approximately 200mm in length is placed on a wooden jig and the XRF analyser is placed in direct contact with the sample.

The XRF analyser bombards the cable material with X-Ray radiation which causes displacement of electrons in the atomic structure of the cable surface. As electrons fall back into the shells they emit or fluoresce energy. This energy can be measured and compared with the specific unique energies for each material type, allowing the determination of the presence of particular materials as well as their proportions within the material.

The RoHS test results are demonstrated by a Pass/ Fail criteria.
